Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National
Park
Your
personal tour guide will pick you from the hotel or meeting point and drive you
to Queen Elizabeth National park, located in Western Uganda. This is an 8 hours
overland transfer. Make a stopover at the Equator for a photo shoot and check
out the local craft centers. After the Equator, a 2 hours drive will lead you
to Lake Mburo National Park. You will not miss zebras and impalas grazing along
the borders of the park, and can make a stopover for a photo shoot. The next
stop over will be Igongo Cultural Centre - an information point for travelers
and students about Uganda's major tourist destinations. This is where we will
enjoy a lunch. Then proceed to Bunyaruguru Tea Estates, pass by the crater
lakes including Lake Rutoto that resembles the map of Africa. Arrive at your
lodge in Queen Elizabeth national park. Overnight stay at The Bush
Lodge / Jacana Safari Lodge (Meal Plan: Full Board)
Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise
Wake
up for a cup of tea and set out for an early morning game drive in the northern
part of the park following the Kasenyi Track in search for lions,
elephants, buffaloes and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for a full
breakfast, visit the salt lakes and see for yourself the local way of
extracting salt. After lunch, at 2.00 pm assemble at the Mweya Peninsula as you
prepare to set off on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel. While on the
boat you will see big herds of buffaloes, monkeys, bush buck, Uganda Kob, topi,
and the Defassa waterbuck, crocodiles; beautiful birds like Cassin’s grey
flycatcher, broad billed roller, and bee-eater live along the banks of Lake
Edward. Overnight stay at The Bush Loge / Jacana Safari Lodge (Meal
Plan: Full Board)
Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking
Enjoy
a hearty breakfast in preparation for the forest walk searching for the
chimpanzees. You may track chimpanzees either in Kyambura Gorge or Karinju
Community Forest. Approximately 1 km across at its broadest point and about 100
meters deep, the stunning Kyambura (or Chambura) Gorge also called the “Valley
of Apes”. It is an opportunity to learn about this special rainforest,
including vegetation types, bird identification and behavior and monkey
ecology. Later transfer to Bwindi National Park, en route drive through Ishasha
Game Reserve for the famous tree climbing lions. Expect to reach Bwindi before
6:00 pm local time. Overnight stay at Buhoma Community Rest Camp
Day 4: Gorilla trekking
Begin
this day with a good breakfast since gorilla trekking will include a long
forest walk. With packed lunch and at least 2 bottles of drinking water,
cameras and binoculars, transfer to the park headquarters for briefing by the
senior park ranger. At 8.30 am gorilla trekking begins. Penetrate the dense
tropical forest with a tropical green canopy until you encounter the mountain
gorillas. Most people who had an opportunity meeting these gentle giants
confess that it is the most exciting wildlife experience ever. Park
officials will allow you to stay in their presence for one hour. The time taken
to encounter the gorillas ranges between an hour and five hours. No one can be
certain over this since the gorillas live in the wild and keep moving looking
for food.
Return
to the lodge for relaxation. If you have been lucky finding the gorillas
closer, you return to the lodge relatively early and enjoy fresh and warm food.
In the evening you can choose from different activities – such as a cultural
visit to pygmies communities or visiting other community projects such as beer
brewing or conservation projects including tree planting sites. Overnight stay
at Buhoma Community Rest Camp or Bakiga Community Lodge
Day 5: Visit conservation projects in Kisoro
Take
off a day to visit the different community conservation projects in Kisoro
organized by Biodiversity Conservation for Rural Development (BCRD – Uganda).
Learn more about projects in which the Batwa pygmies collaborate to start up
different conservation projects. Overnight stay at Mutanda Eco
Community Centre at the gate of Mgahinga National Park
Day 6: Golden Monkeys tracking
After
breakfast transfer to the Mgahinga National Park headquarters for briefing and
later begin the hike over the volcanic terrain in search for Golden
Monkeys in the bamboo forests. Mgahinga National Park shares boarders
with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo.
The park is also the most scenic as it stands at three volcanoes of Muhavura,
Gahinga and Sabyinyo. In the evening theBatwa Trail is another
highlight you should not miss. Listen to their folk tales and songs. Overnight
stay at Mutanda Eco Community Centre
Day 7: End of Safari
After
breakfast transfer back to Kampala as you traverse the scenic Kigezi Highlands,
commonly referred to as “the Switzerland of Africa”. Arrive in Kampala by 3.00
pm.
