A day on a dhow in the Indian Ocean
Spend the day exploring the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean around the island of Zanzibar. Sail on a traditional hand-built dhow which has been adapted to offer a full range of comfortable services such as awnings, boarding ladders, comfortable seating, refreshments etc; and equipped to the highest safety standards.
Collected from your hotel, you will travel to the small fishing village of Fumba, where you will board your dhow. You will then set sail to explore the Menai Bay Conservation Area, which features a number of uninhabited islands, idyllic islets and sandbanks. Often visited by schools of humpback and bottlenose dolphins, your trip will allow you an 85% chance of seeing these charming and friendly creatures.
Unspoilt and beautiful, the Bay is famous for its impressive coral gardens, tropical fish and mangrove forests; it is also a major turtle protection and breeding area.
A seafood and fruit lunch will be served on a tiny island and followed by the chance to snorkel the clear blue warm waters of the bay (all equipment is provided). Alternatively you may like to join the crew of a local ngalawa or out-rigger canoe, which has been made by hand from a single mango tree. Trade winds permitting, you will return to Fumba under sail and then transfer back to your hotel. Duration: one full day (Fumba is 18 kms (45 mins) from Zanzibar Town.)
